iNova Credit Union Profile

What is today iNova Credit Union was formed on April 1, 1936 by a Canada Post supervisor and his colleagues, 12 men in total, who met on a porch located on Parker St, Halifax, Nova Scotia and formed the Halifax District Postal Credit Union Ltd. They wanted to give postal workers a place to deposit their salaries, have access to loans, be treated with respect and know their organization was based on the Co-operative Principles, Values and Personal Ethical Values for Co-operators, see appendix one.

After two name changes and 68 years iNova Credit Union began serving the entire community with a full range of banking products and services.

In keeping with the principle of Concern for Community, iNova has developed a comprehensive sustainability plan based on The Natural Step (TNS) framework that drives our Social Responsibility mandate. With its focus on this principle, iNova continues to look for opportunities to deepen its impact on its community in an ever increasing circle of influence.

iNova Credit Union has developed partnerships that have permitted it to lever its ability to influence. In addition, to TNS it has formed alliances with both government and non-government organizations as well as the Credit Union network.

iNova is fully committed to focus on being financial sound, having a policy of all people matter and promoting financial and environmental sustainability.

In April, 2009 iNova Credit Union’s efforts were recognized; iNova received the Coady Award, which is presented annually to the credit union or caisse populaire in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador that best exemplifies leadership, contribution and commitment to social action and the well-being of their community.

Later in 2009 iNova was nominated by a Saint Mary’s University student for the Better Business Bureau of the Maritime Provinces for its Ethics Award. On November 18, 2009 iNova Credit Union was honoured to win in its category.

iNova Credit Union is a proactive community oriented financial institute of choice providing sustainable solutions to an engaged membership through exceptional people.
